There are two types of wrinkles that your face will eventually show over time:
- Dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by facial expressions such as laughing, smiling, frowning, furrowing your brow, and squinting. These expressions cause wrinkles to form at the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet), on the sides of the mouth (laugh lines), in the forehead (worry lines), and at the top of your nose between your eyes. With dynamic wrinkles, once you relax the muscles that cause the lines, the lines will disappear. However, over time, the muscles will start to shorten and dynamic wrinkles will start to remain after the muscle relaxes. They will continue to deepen the more you make the same facial expressions and the shorter/tighter your muscles get.
- Static wrinkles are those that don’t go away after you relax your facial muscles and they tend to deepen over time. This is caused by a slowing of collagen production in your facial skin that normally would help to plump skin back into place, keeping static wrinkles from forming. Typically, static wrinkles are found at the corners of the mouth, across the cheeks, and around the neck. Aging, exposure to sunlight, and smoking are some of the many factors that can contribute to this process.
While wrinkles don’t normally start to become noticeable until people are in their 30s or 40s, in some cases, wrinkles can start to appear on people in their 20s, making them look older and constantly exhausted, even when they are healthy and refreshed. Fortunately, modern science can help restore a more youthful appearance for people of almost any age.
For static wrinkles, dermal fillers injected into the crevices can help to “plump” the skin under the wrinkle, pushing the skin back into place. For dynamic wrinkles and fine lines, Botox® injections will help to relax the muscles that have shortened/tightened over time, giving your skin a more youthful appearance while easing or eliminating the fine lines and wrinkles that have formed.
Botox® injections are a minimally invasive alternative to having a surgical facelift performed. As an alternative to major surgery, there is little to no downtime after the injections have been applied. Directly after treatment, patients may experience small bumps or redness at the injections sites, and possibly some minor bruising. However, these symptoms should clear within 24-48 hours. Some patients may see immediate results after receiving Botox ® injections, although it is common for the injections to start taking effect for three to five days. Normally, full and final results will be apparent within seven to 10 days.
Botox® will continue to keep dynamic wrinkles from forming for three to four months, although some patients have seen great results for up to six months. First-time patients may only experience results for two to three months, but subsequent injections will help to loosen tight facial muscles more and more with each session, providing longer-lasting results as they go back for follow-up sessions.
Conclusion:
Crow’s feet, laugh lines, worry lines, and other types of wrinkles form when people laugh, cry, furrow their brows, or wince. These kinds of wrinkles are called dynamic wrinkles because they tend to go away after the facial expression has relaxed. Over time, the muscles responsible for these wrinkles will shorten and the wrinkles will remain. Botox® injections are a great method for relaxing the muscles again, diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
